Roto-Rooter Rescues Kitten Stuck in Storm Drain
ATLANTA -- A 5-week-old kitten is now down to eight lives after being rescued from a storm drain.
Neighbors at a Vinings area apartment complex told CBS Atlanta the kitten fell in the drain Sunday while following its mom.
One neighbor, Crissy Shelton, had just returned from her honeymoon Sunday night.
"Sunday and Monday and this morning we heard the kitten screaming, so that's when we got really worried," Sheldon said. "We threw lunch meat down there so it would have something to eat."
Neighbors said the kitten was screaming so loudly during its ordeal in the storm drain, it was hard for them to sleep. They tried desperately to get the cat out; one dad even ventured down the well at the urging of his 4-year-old daughter.
"She told me to go down there and save the kitty," said Brad Reed. "I went down there, but I couldn't get to it."
A frustrated Shelton said she finally Googled the phrase "how to save a cat from a storm drain."
"Roto-Rooter popped right up," Sheldon said laughing.
She called Roto-Rooter and said workers were on the scene within an hour.
Roto Rooter said it's unusual to get calls like this.
"Normally it's a cell phone or a diamond ring," said Roto-Rooter supervisor Steve Gonzalez. "This was a little bit unique."
It took them three hours to free the kitty. "There was no way we were giving up," Gonzalez said.
In fact, one of the Roto Rooter rescuers wants to adopt the kitty, nicknamed Stormy, after the storm drain it was found in.
"She definitely will have a good home," Gonzalez said.
